Marble Falls Fire Rescue, in partnership with Marble Falls Independent School District, founded the M.I.M.E.S. Fire Camp in 2012.
M.I.M.E.S., Mentoring Industrious Minds & Educating Students, is a week long, job related mentoring program coordinated by Marble Falls Fire Rescue. Participants are selected from the 7th Grade at both public and private Schools. Participants learn not only career related information, but participate in other fun activities during the week.
Kids learn how to extinguish a fire using a portable fire extinguisher, how to provide basic first aid, how to save themselves and others in a smoke-filled building and participate in several "hand s-on" projects such as hose streams, breathing apparatus, and search & rescue drills.
While there is always lots of fun, students also participate in some more "serious" activities such as the daily station duties or "chores" around the fire house. These duties include emptying trash, sweeping, mopping, cleaning, etc.
Finally, kids also are educated on how math, science, communication, personal character and teamwork fit into firefighting and EMS professions. Parents are invited to participate in the graduation and presentation of certificates on the final day of camp.
